MEDIA RELEASE

Lindsay, ON (February 23, 2023)

Over the Family Day long weekend, the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes (HSKL) welcomed 19 lovely cats and kittens and 25 adorable puppies and dogs from remote Northern Ontario communities. Originally HSKL planned to receive only a few new furry friends. However, their doors were opened wider when the rescue group that agreed to take these animals cancelled mid-transport due to unforeseen circumstances.

In remote Northern and Indigenous fly-in communities, there is no access to veterinarian care.  The animal populations grow out of control very quickly. Often at this time of year, there are food insecurities and a lack of resources to sustain these pets. Stray animals also suffer from severe weather and injuries. Due to the Pandemic, it has been and continues to be challenging to have mobile spay/neuter clinics.  Pet overpopulation is at a crisis point. HSKL knew they had to jump in because it is a difficult time of the year due to extreme temperatures in the North. They had the space and resources to help.

Northern Reach Rescue Network organized and provided foster homes in Thunder Bay while the animals waited for transport to southern destinations. The Bark Bus, a trusted partner owned by Northern Legacy Horse Farm in Whitefish, Ontario, transported from Thunder Bay to HSKL in Lindsay. Volunteers walked the dogs and provided breaks for the animals along the route. On Sunday, it was all hands on deck while our small army of HSKL dedicated volunteers and staff unloaded and settled the precious cargo safely into their temporary home.

“We are lucky currently to have the space and resources to help these animals in desperate need of homes.  Our team acted quickly to bring them into care,” stated Judi Cannon, Executive Director, Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes. “As a registered charity, we depend on the generosity of donors to help get these animals out of the cold and to find their forever families.”

How can you help? Monetary donations are critical to enable HSKL to care for these animals in need. Fostering and adopting are also ways to support so they can find a warm couch to call their own.
