Volunteer Coordinator 
*Note: This position is UNPAID, as it is a volunteer position*                  

Reports to the Shelter Manager/Executive Director
Expected work hours: 15 hrs per week

The Volunteer Program is the backbone of the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes.  The Volunteer Coordinator will work with staff and volunteers to enhance and maintain the existing volunteer program, improve communications with volunteers and develop and implement strategies to increase volunteer participation. 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, review, revise and implement comprehensive volunteer policies and procedures.
  • Develop, review, revise volunteer job descriptions and orientation and training manuals. 
  • Ensure current practices in Volunteer Management are incorporated into HSKL practices.
  • Enhance and develop management of volunteer information (hard and computer files)
  • Ensure all volunteer files are complete and up to date
  • Develop and implement recruitment strategies for all volunteers.
  • Create and lead a Volunteer Committee that will consist of Team Leaders for each volunteer responsibility centre.
  • Provide initial and ongoing training for volunteers.  
  • Work with the committees to plan and coordinate all volunteer appreciation activities.
  • Work closely with the Fundraising Committee to develop an enhanced fundraising volunteer group to assist with fundraising activities.
  • Develop and implement volunteer program communications practices.
  • Track all data pertinent to the volunteer program.

Education/Experience:

  • Relevant university degree or college diploma or equivalent experience is preferred.
  • 2 to 3 years of volunteer management experience
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Experience computer skills 
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Must not have allergies limiting or affecting exposure to animals

Animal Care Attendant 1 (ACA1)
Part time contract –  12 hrs per week 

$14.93 per hour

The Animal Care Attendant will assist in the daily operations of the Shelter.  Duties will include caring for the health and welfare of the animals, management of their medical and physical needs, maintaining sanitary and humane conditions, dealing courteously with the public, and the adoption and surrender process.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  • Feeding of all animals housed within the Humane Society 
  • General cleaning and disinfecting of the premises and equipment used within the shelter, i.e. food  bowls, cat litter pans, utensils, carrying cages 
  • Laundry duties as required 
  • General bathing and grooming of animals 
  • Vaccinating and deworming shelter animals 
  • Notifying supervisor of any health problems or concerns regarding the animals 
  • Exercising of animals 
  • Assisting the public with adoptions and inquiries 
  • Following policies and procedures set out by the Society and reporting all incidents to his/her supervisor immediately 
  • Working in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations. 
  • Immediately reporting all incidents of injury, property damage, absence of or failure of a protective device and/or equipment to the supervisor 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Must have a genuine compassion for animals 
  • Animal care training and experience would be an asset 
  • Good communication and customer service skills 
  • Must be flexible to perform a variety of duties 
  • Must not have allergies limiting or affecting exposure to animals 
  • Class G Drivers License is required 
  • Must have completed grade 12 education or equivalent 
  • Note: this position requires regular weekend work
